Diy Quail Cage Making

It’s not at all difficult to make quail cages with your own hands. To do this, prepare a minimum of tools and materials. The most common option is a wooden frame covered in mesh. Install structures in a barn or other heated room. Quail – the birds are very delicate, they equally can not tolerate both too high (25 ° C and above) and low (less than 15 ° C) temperatures. When the performance drops below 5 ° C, the birds die. Therefore, the quail must have good ventilation and the simplest heating system.

As a rule, the role of a heat source is played by a solid fuel boiler. In the cold season, the air temperature in the room is maintained at 10 … 15 ° C. Due to the fact that quails emit a large amount of heat, inside the cage the thermometer will show 5-7 ° C more.

Cell types

The need for keeping birds in cages is due to the fact that birds of this species are very nimble, can climb into any gap, hide in a corner and die. Therefore, when building quail cages, this circumstance must be taken into account. A bird cage is made for birds of a certain age. As the quail grows, they move to various residential devices, including:

  1. Brooder. In it, the bird is located after the incubator and until the age of three to four weeks.
  2. Adolescent cell. Quail is transplanted after the brooder before the laying of eggs. This period in different breeds begins in different ways: at 45 days for the Japanese and 60 for the Texas.
  3. For layers. From the beginning of egg laying until its completion.
  4. For fattening. There are birds of one age group – males and culled hens.

Typically, individual sections are combined into quail cell batteries. This method can significantly save space and contain a large number of birds in a small area.

Teenage facilities

The process of cell construction is well described in the books of M. D. Pigareva “Breeding of quail” and S. P. Bondarenko “Content of quail”. In them, the authors give practical advice on the manufacture of sections for group and single keeping of birds, preparation of feed, incubation of eggs, rearing of young animals and other important and necessary issues for the poultry farmer.

The manufacture of quail cages implies the presence of:

  • wooden blocks or boards;
  • Fiberboard or other sheet material;
  • metal mesh;
  • fasteners;
  • woodworking tools.

The size of the quail cage depends on the number of birds and is usually 100x50x20 cm. It can contain 50-55 individuals. The height of the structure may be less. They try to take off quail from the age of 25-30 days, and since they do it vertically, there is a high probability of injury to birds.

Work begins with the manufacture of the framework. For this, wooden slats with a cross section of 25×50 mm are used. The lower part is made of a bar mounted on the rib, the upper is flat. The frames made are connected by struts with a height of 20 cm. Self-tapping screws are used to assemble parts. A grid with a 10×10 or 10×20 mm cell is attached to the lower frame. This allows the litter to collect in pallets and not accumulate on the cage floor. The front and one of the sides are tightened with a 20×50 mm mesh. A feeder is installed on the front side, and a drinking bowl on the side. The door is located so that it is convenient to get a bird.

The roof is made only on the upper section, in the rest its role will be played by the pallet for collecting quail litter. It is made of fiberboard and mounted on the upper frame of the subordinate cell. So that the pallet does not get wet, it is impregnated with drying oil, and then painted. To give rigidity to the element, a bar is nailed to the leading edge.

Quail cells can collect in the battery. To do this, you need 4 bars with a cross section of at least 25×50 mm. At a height of 50-60 cm from the floor, they are fastened together by a frame made in the form of a rectangular figure 8, with dimensions identical to the cage. This element will serve as the basis for the pallet into which the litter will be collected. The first cell is attached above it. The distance between the bottom and the pallet should be 5-7 cm. This will make it possible to easily remove it for cleaning. Typically, a cell battery is assembled from 4 sections, which makes it easy to maintain them.

Laying facility

Making cages for chickens is slightly different from teenage ones. The difference is that the floor is tilted to allow the eggs to be rolled and ends with an egg collector. To create the necessary slope, the frames are fastened together by racks of different heights. The rear ones are made 5 cm shorter than the front ones. The lower parts are cut obliquely to ensure their vertical position during fastening.

The dimensions of the mesh should be 15-17 cm greater than the width of the lower frame. Its front part is bent up and will serve as the front rim of the egg collector. The upper wire mesh should be located across the cage. This will allow the egg to roll out without problems. The fastening of the mesh to the front rail of the frame should not impede its free rolling. For the same purpose, the gap between the bottom of the feeder and the floor should be about 3 cm. The side walls of the egg collector are usually made from scraps of mesh and fastened with a thin wire. In case of deficiency of the net, the egg collector can be made of tin or other material according to the same principle.

The back and one of the side walls can be made of sheet materials available. In bright light, quail behave uneasily, so there must be a darkened corner in the cage in which they can take refuge. You can build a cage completely from the grid, but then there is a high probability of drafts that negatively affect the condition of the birds. They stop trotting and drop feathers. Therefore, before making a quail cage with your own hands, you need to determine the place of its installation and eliminate all possible sources of draft.

When making a cell with electric heating, it is necessary to comply with fire safety requirements. If the heater is planned to be installed on the rear wall, then it must be made of galvanized sheet.

Roofs in cages, except for the top, are not manufactured, and their role is played by a pallet for collecting quail droppings. So that it does not stick, and it is easy to remove, the sheet is sprinkled with a layer of sawdust, straw or grass. Quail litter is considered one of the best organic fertilizers. The number of pallets should be more than cells. When cleaning, a backup is inserted instead of the removed one.

Fattening cages

Home-made quail cages intended for keeping a rejected bird and its fattening do not differ in design from teenage ones. However, there are significant differences in the location of these cells and the feeding regimen. As a rule, they are not installed separately, but are an integral part of batteries for laying hens. Sections are located in the lower tier. They should be sufficiently shaded, and food in the feeders must be constantly.

As a rule, males and females are in different cages or in different departments. The period of fattening should not exceed 2 weeks, since with a longer period the bird begins to quickly fatten. Cell sizes allow you to place up to 50-55 heads in them. After slaughtering the bird, the cells must be removed and disinfected. To do this, there is no need to disassemble the battery. Simply screw out the screws securing the cage to the rack, and after that the section is removed.

For a small number of birds, a quail cage from plastic boxes can be used. For this, 3 products of different sizes are needed: 1 high and 2 low. From a small side walls are cut off and only the bottom is left. They place it with legs in the openings of the racks of a large box and fasten them with wire. The resulting structure is placed on a small box, previously covering the bottom with paper. He will act as a pallet for litter. A door is cut out on one of the walls for planting and removing the bird. Such a quail house can be installed not only in the barn, but also on the balcony. To avoid unpleasant odors, clean the pallet daily. In such a cage, a quail family consisting of 3 females and a cockerel can also be kept. It’s not difficult to get laid eggs.

Correctly made and installed in shaded places cages will create optimal conditions for breeding quail. And this will certainly affect the egg production of the bird.
