Many pet lovers keep small decorative parrots. There are many breeds for every taste. But it is no secret to anyone that in order for the parrot to feel comfortable, it needs a convenient cage.
The first thing you need to decide before you start tinkering a cell is its size. As a rule, the recommended optimal cage size for a parrot is 60x35x25 cm, based on the content of one (pair) budgerigars. If you plan to make two pairs, then the dimensions should be twice as large.
The size of the cage should not be neglected, it is certainly impossible to save a lot of material, but the bird will not be comfortable. The main condition for matching the size of the cage for a parrot is that the bird can fully open its wings.
The next step is to first estimate the construction of the cell and preferably draw it on a piece of paper, indicating all sizes. The standard design of the cage consists of a bottom (pallet), frame, and roof. Depending on what the frame will be made of, it is necessary to foresee how the door will be arranged, fastenings for the feeding trough (drinking bowls, mirrors) and toys.
- The pallet will be a small box, which is best made from bars (racks) 2×5 cm and fiberboard. The sides of the pallet should not be made very small, since there will be leftovers of food in it that the parrot can rake out.
- The frame for the cell, as a rule, is a grid bent in the form of a cube or fixed on the frame. The grid must be selected with a small cell (1-2 cm).
- Metal profile, corner, wire (copper).
- Self-tapping screws for metal (seeds), nails.
- Drill, metal scissors, screwdriver, pliers, file.
To carefully insert the ends of the wire mesh into the holes, it is best to disassemble the frame and reassemble it together with the wire mesh. This approach will prevent the grid from bending during installation and thereby spoil the look.
Homemade cages for parrots need to be made from environmentally friendly materials so as not to harm the bird. The net should not be covered with polymeric materials in the same way as a parrot can gnaw it. It is better to use wooden blocks of strong types of wood (oak, ash), this will help extend the life of the cell, if water spills inside. To give the cell a beautiful appearance, you can paint it using only eco-friendly paint.
Instructions for the manufacture of a typical cage for parrots:
Manufacturing framework. This stage is the most responsible, since the strength of the entire structure, as well as the type of cell, depends on it. The frames cannot be allowed to be uneven, otherwise the cell will be ugly and crooked. In accordance with the sketch, the metal profile is cut into blanks. Each frame will consist of four blanks.
The lateral parts of the metal profile are cut off, and the longitudinal part is bent at a right angle. The upper and lower parts will be attached to this curved longitudinal part of the two side walls. The components of the frames are attached using self-tapping screws for the profile.
In accordance with the size of the resulting frames, cut off the desired amount of mesh. The mesh must be fitted to the edges of the profile so that no gaps form. Next, attaching the grid to the frame, mark the intersection of the frame and the ends of the wire frame.
In place of the marks in the frame, it is necessary to drill holes whose diameter corresponds to the diameter of the wire mesh.
Now that the cage is almost ready, it remains only with the help of small hooks made of wire to place all the necessary items in the cage and she is ready to accept her feathered master. It turns out fun for the pet home.
The ends of the wire mesh sticking out the frame are bent with pliers, thereby stiffening the entire frame as a whole. In total, you should get five frames. Two as side walls, two for the front and back, and another for the top of the cage.
The one-piece frame of the frame is fastened with the help of corners and screws.
A simpler way to make a frame, namely four walls for a cage, is to use a stiffer mesh with a wire diameter of 3-4 mm. Such a grid simply bends in four places at angles of 90 degrees, thereby forming a box. The two edges of the mesh end-to-end are twisted with wire or attached to a corner in pre-prepared holes. Such a frame is less durable, but much easier to manufacture.
A door must be provided on the front wall of the frame. The only thing that needs to be considered before starting to cut it out is that it does not have to be very large so as not to deform the mesh remaining in this frame. After the hole for the door is cut out, the protruding ends of the wire mesh must be sharpened with a file. The door itself with curtains and a lock will not be difficult to come up with from the remaining material.
The base of the cage (pallet) is made of harvested bars, cut in accordance with the size of the frame. The bars are knocked together by nails, and the fiberboard is knocked to the bottom.
As an option, a retractable pallet can be made. With the metal profile, the frame of the required size is made, and a galvanized sheet is attached as the bottom. Thanks to the drawer, the cage can be kept clean at all times. The resulting frame and pallet are attached to each other by corners. To give an aesthetic appearance, you can paint the cell with paint.
Only 12 steps and it turned out a beautiful cage for a parrot. With your own hands you can make not only a square cage, it all depends on desire and capabilities. If desired, it is not difficult to craft a multi-tiered polygonal cage.
