How to choose a bird cage?
Decorative and songbirds spend their entire lives in a cage, so it makes no sense to deny that it plays a huge role in all aspects of their life. In this regard, most future owners of birds have a logical question: how to choose a bird cage to make them comfortable? Today we will give an answer to it.
The key to the right choice
The most important point in choosing a cage in which your favorite canary or parrot will later settle is not design and appearance, but convenience and safety. And in this case we are talking about the occupant of the housing, and about yourself. In turn, these two aspects directly depend on the following parameters.
It is quite difficult to give exact recommendations in the size of the cage, since they directly depend on the type of bird and on how large the individual is. In general, the choice can be guided by a fairly simple recommendation: after organizing separate zones for food and sleep, the pet (and parrots also have bathtubs for bathing) should have enough space to spread its wings and walk or jump around the interior for a bit.
If there is not enough space, the bird will lead a sedentary lifestyle, which is likely to lead to health problems (first of all, to obesity). Access to a large “living space” can also have negative consequences, for example, an increase in the period of addiction and the associated stress.
When choosing among cells of different shapes, it is best to give preference to as simple as rectangular or square. Yes, round and other “designer” models look very interesting, but from a practical point of view they do not show their best. At the same time, in a simple cage, you can easily place all the necessary accessories, and the bird itself can use the remaining space for its needs.
In addition, do not forget about the need for regular cleaning (it should be done at least once every 3 weeks), during which non-standard solutions will only interfere.
The materials are just as simple. Despite the great variety, the most ordinary stainless steel mesh can still be considered the best option. It does not require special care, is easy to clean and, unlike metal rods coated with paint, which birds love to peel, is completely safe.
Plastic bird cages are not recommended: they have wider rods, which makes air circulate worse. In addition, cheap models often have a flap at the edges, which can damage the legs of a bird. It is best if only the feeder and the removable tray are made of plastic.
Separately, it is worth focusing on the perches: the tree is best shown here. Since the bird holds its claws when sitting on them, it is important that the material is non-slip and soft enough. In this case, the plastic has the ability to slip in the paws, which causes inconvenience to the pet and can lead to the appearance of corns.
And the last moment of choosing a cage that is directly responsible for convenience and safety is the design.
A mandatory attribute of a good cage is a removable tray. As mentioned above, it is best if it is plastic. Its presence allows you to change the filler and wash the bottom of the cell, which is contaminated in the first place, with minimal inconvenience to the feathered tenant. If there is no possibility to remove the pallet, before each cleaning, the bird will have to be removed and transplanted into a carrier or released to fly around the apartment.
And another important point that you should pay attention to when choosing a bird cage is the design of the door. There are 4 options in total:
- opening up (on hinges),
- opening down
- sideways opening
- rise (slider).
The safest can be considered the classic options, when the door just swings open down or sideways. When the door opens up, owners sometimes forget to close it on a hook after it drops under its own weight, which often leads to an escape. Sliders are the most unreliable: the most cunning and large birds cope with them on their own.
In conclusion, once again we single out a complete list of the attributes of a good cage for decorative and song birds in a single list:
- it has the shape of a cube or parallelepiped,
- the amount of internal space is sufficient for the activity of the pet,
- rods made of unpainted stainless steel,
- the door swings open sideways or down and has a reliable lock,
- The pallet is made of plastic and is easy to remove.
When you choose a cage for your new tenant, be sure to read the general rules for installing it in the apartment and keeping poultry. We talked about them earlier.
